I dreamed of my mother last night; she passed away several months ago. It was a beautiful dream, and I wished it hadn’t ended when I woke up.

The setting was a brightly lit front room of a house filled with a lively, party-like atmosphere. Although I couldn’t identify most of the people present, they moved with purpose, preparing and serving food. I felt slightly out of place amid the busy scene. Soon, I found myself near my mother, who was now joined by my aunt, who had passed away many years ago. While I couldn’t hear their entire conversation, I caught a fragment about my father. My mother mentioned something about him passing before her, which stood out to me because, in reality, she had passed before him. This discrepancy stirred something within me, and I woke up shortly after.

Sitting in bed, I reflected on the dream, feeling a mix of emotions. The sight of my mother and aunt, vibrant and together, filled me with a deep sense of longing. But the reference to my father left me puzzled. Since my mother’s passing, my father’s health has significantly declined. I wondered if the dream was a subtle preparation for the inevitable, a sign that the countdown for him, accelerated by grief, had begun. Perhaps my mother was expressing her own longing for my father since her transition. The meaning wasn’t entirely clear, but the thought brought me a certain peace. It felt comforting to imagine that when the time comes, he will be reunited with my mother, his wife of over 60 years, in love and light.

Thank heavens for the continuity beyond death, for the assurance that we don’t simply disappear into nothingness. I am grateful for the sensitivity that allows me to connect with my loved ones on the other side. It brings comfort and hope, a gift I am honoured to share by helping others connect with their loved ones as well.
