Last night, I was almost asleep when I heard my mum’s distinct voice. She called me by the nickname she used when I was very young. Hearing her voice was a pleasant surprise. We rarely realise how deeply we miss our loved ones until we experience a meaningful reminder of them, or what feels like a more personal and direct communication.
It was around 3 a.m., and I could not get back to sleep. So, I made myself a coffee, and here I am, writing this article. After hearing her voice, I wished the moment had lasted longer. My memories carried me back to a special place, our front room, where my mum and I would often enjoy our morning coffee together. She suffered terribly from the dreaded tinnitus. Quite often, we would find her slumped on the sofa in the front room, exhausted from her relentless battle with the unending noise. Yet, despite all her pain, she still managed to greet us with a magical smile.
People sometimes ask whether I am in touch with my mother on the other side. I explain that I do not actively seek contact, but I welcome her visitations when they come. For me, it is difficult to know whether such experiences are genuine or simply subjective. What I do know, however, is that she is in a better place.
Mystery surrounds my mother’s passing. She left this Earth under circumstances that remain difficult to explain. I heard contradictory accounts from different witnesses who were present, and I even consulted other readers, but without success. Eventually, I came to realise that the answer I needed had been in front of me all along. I had to let her go.
My mum endured years of torment from tinnitus, and regardless of the circumstances surrounding her passing, I hope that it finally brought her peace. I also realised that my search for definitive answers had become an act of selfishness, born from my own need for closure. What purpose would it truly have served?
I look at letting go in that sense, not as an act of defeat but rather a way to honour my mother and to show faith in the other side. She fought the good fight. Now, she can finally rest with the angels on the other side.
