My patient, a dear friend, lay in a hospital bed, struggling to breathe. She was dying. Her eyes were closed, and her mouth hung open as she gasped for air. Occasionally, she writhed in pain. I sensed that part of her wanted to let go, while another part still wanted to stay. Her family was devastated by the sight of her suffering and was literally falling apart.
I entered her hospital room accompanied by her husband. I did not feel there was much I could do for her, but I prayed for her nonetheless. It was difficult to focus because I knew her well and was deeply fond of her and her family. When I finished, her husband whispered a question. Was there anything I could do to help her? I understood that he was asking me if I could help free her so that she could make her transition. Her struggle was evident, but it was even more painful for her family to witness. On previous occasions, family members had asked me to help their loved ones transition, and I followed a specific procedure involving deep meditation. I must emphasise, however, that it works only if God and Spirit will it.
When I returned home, I asked not to be disturbed and went to my room. I did not tell my wife what I was about to do. I never do in such cases because I know how much it would hurt her. It took me a while to resolve my inner conflict. I am a healer, and by nature, I do everything I can to help people recover. Yet here I was, once again, being called upon to do the exact opposite. I began my meditation and felt the familiar sensation that tells me I am ready to proceed. I will not describe the process itself, but it is based on visualisation. Eventually, I returned to myself, feeling as though I had travelled a great distance to somewhere beyond my ordinary experience. I was mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted, so I slept for a while.
The following day, I received the news that she had transitioned peacefully. Once again, I felt conflicted, but deep in my heart, I knew that she was in a better place and no longer suffering. I did not discuss what had happened with anyone. Instead, I let it go.
My communicator on the other side had previously told me that this process was also a form of healing, as it set the soul free from its cage and alleviated suffering all around. I set aside my own feelings and accepted that I have a responsibility to serve, a responsibility that extends beyond myself. I am merely the instrument, the facilitator. The outcome rests in God’s hands.
