Once upon a time, physical séances were hugely popular, particularly in England. Spiritualist circles dedicated to such phenomena existed throughout the country, and the physical manifestations attributed to otherworldly visitors were remarkable. Some spirits reportedly communicated through direct voice, while others materialised before those present. Objects, and sometimes even people, were said to move or levitate. On occasion, animals and pets were also reported to have manifested in similar ways.
These events were often conducted in the presence of multiple witnesses. In some cases, observers diligently documented what took place, either by taking notes or by using the limited recording technology available at the time, including tape recorders and low-resolution cameras. Such devices were primitive by modern standards and often produced unreliable results.
Nevertheless, these séances were fascinating and seemed to bring the worlds of the living and the dead closer together than ever before. People from all walks of life attended, including members of high society and even royalty. Certain mediums became internationally renowned, attracting widespread attention and considerable public interest.
However, there was a significant drawback. Physical séances generally had to be conducted in complete darkness, sometimes with the aid of a faint red light. According to the explanations offered by physical mediums, this was necessary because the ectoplasm associated with these phenomena was believed to be highly sensitive to light. Such conditions, however, created opportunities for unscrupulous individuals to exploit the situation, particularly when substantial sums of money were involved.
Unfortunately, the activities of fraudulent practitioners damaged the reputation of physical mediumship. As suspicions grew, it became increasingly difficult for people to distinguish genuine phenomena from deception, and public interest gradually waned.
It is a great shame, as so much was reportedly achieved during the séances regarded by their supporters as genuine. Yet, over time, this once-popular aspect of Spiritualism largely faded from public view.
Today, a few small circles devoted to physical séances are still said to operate in Britain. However, they are extremely rare and tend to remain closely guarded from outsiders to preserve the privacy and integrity of their work.
