After my mother’s passing last year, my siblings and I began the process of clearing out her belongings. I found a handwritten note that she had written herself (though I’m not sure when) inside a wardrobe. My mother was deeply religious and prayed nearly every day, but she also had a lovely sense of humour and a vibrant, bubbly personality.

I visited her a month before she passed. During that visit, she pointed out a few items she wanted me to have after she was gone. I thanked her but dismissed what she was saying. She was larger than life, and I could not imagine that she would be gone so soon.

When it was time for me to return to London, I kissed her goodbye and told her I would see her again in a few months. She shook her head and said, “Let’s see if I am still around by then.”

She passed away a month later. In the days that followed, we discovered many clues that suggest she somehow knew her time was coming.

Below is the raw translation of the handwritten document my mother left behind:

God,

I lived my life for him, and if I were to die, I would die for Him.

He is the master, and I am the servant, and it is crucial for me to be a good and patient servant.

And to meet with sincere gratitude all that comes from his good hand and kind heart.

God’s kindness surpasses that of parents by millions of times.

So do not feel sad if I were to die one day. I love God with all of my heart, my strength and my thoughts.

God gave me everything, amen.
