After they are gone, many changes occur around us and within us. We may start listening to the music they liked, eating the foods they enjoyed, or consuming the drinks they preferred. Some of us feel drawn to the friends or pets they left behind.

A lady I know never liked coffee, but after her mother, a coffee drinker, passed away, she started drinking at least a couple of cups every day. A friend described how he could never stand the smell of the tobacco his father smoked or the aftershave he used. Yet after his father’s passing, he began wearing the same aftershave. Although he was not a smoker, if he happened to smell tobacco smoke anywhere in public, he would pause to take it in.

I found myself listening to the same radio station and music that my mother enjoyed when she was with us, even though I was never a fan of her taste. I now eat combinations of foods that she liked and even watch the television series she used to follow.

There may be a scientific explanation behind this phenomenon. I see the world from a simple perspective, so I imagine that our loved ones may leave a lasting impression of their magic behind, and that is why we end up appreciating what they did.

Have you ever had such an experience?
