A few years ago, my parents’ home was burglarized. The police arrived swiftly and began their investigation. We had security personnel on duty, yet they claimed to have neither seen nor heard anything; a claim that struck me as highly suspicious.

What I hadn’t told anyone, not even the police, was that I’d had a strange dream about a week before the break-in. In this dream, I saw a pack of ‘human rats’ scurrying out of our house, fleeing into the night. At the time, the dream seemed too bizarre to interpret. But as I watched the police gather evidence and question the security guards, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the dream had been a premonition. I stood quietly on the sidelines, observing, and regretted not sharing the dream with my father. Perhaps we could have taken precautions and even prevented the burglary.

“So, what do you think happened here?” the lieutenant asked me.

I told him I wasn’t sure, but he continued, “Do you think it’s an inside job? Do you think it could be them?” he said, glancing toward the guards.

I hesitated. He then asked, “What do you feel?”

Surprised by the question, I wondered if he somehow sensed that I had an intuition about the situation. I hadn’t shared my dream or mentioned any feelings to anyone. Yet, his expectant nod seemed to encourage me to trust my instincts. I explained that the guards’ behavior had struck me as unusual from the start. Normally, they were quick to help with luggage and tasks, but on this occasion, they’d kept their distance. I’d had to call them over, which felt strange.

“Me too,” he replied, giving me a reassuring pat on the shoulder before returning to his work. In the days that followed, the investigation revealed that the guards had indeed facilitated the break-in. They were arrested soon after.

Questions swirled in my mind: What had prompted the lieutenant to ask about my feelings? How had he sensed there was more to my silence?

As the police returned for follow-up visits, I began to see how much of their work relied on intuition as much as on evidence. The lieutenant, whom I eventually befriended, confided that they could often recognize a guilty party on sight, long before formal questioning.

“We know we’ve found our suspect the moment we see them,” he explained. “Everything after that is just procedural; a series of steps we’re obligated to follow.”
