I watched the excellent series 1883 on Netflix about a month ago, and I had intended to write an article specifically about the scene where Shea comforts another character, Elsa.
Elsa was mourning someone she loved deeply. She sat by his grave when Shea joined her and shared his own story. What he said moved me profoundly, and I felt compelled to share it. I’ve included a link to that particular scene in the comments section.
I’ve heard from clients who, after losing a loved one, began craving foods they normally wouldn’t eat; foods that had been favorites of the person they lost. Some described a noticeable shift in their tastes for colors, music, and other preferences. It was as if their loved one was somehow living through them.
One woman told me she had always detested her mother’s cigarette smoke. It irritated her so much that it made her feel physically ill. Yet, after her mother passed, whenever she caught that same scent in public, she found herself breathing it in and feeling comforted, as if her mother were there with her.
Maybe there is truth in the idea of trading souls. Maybe it isn’t just psychological.
Have you ever experienced something like this?
