What is it about the paranormal that evokes fear in so many? Is it because we naturally fear what we don’t understand? Or are we somehow preconditioned to fear it, regardless of our knowledge or experiences?
I’ve often wondered what it is about the paranormal that triggers such fear. After all, there are far more pressing concerns in everyday life than the prospect of an unseen force moving objects or changing TV channels. So why does the paranormal unsettle us so deeply?
Perhaps the answer lies in our reliance on the five senses. We are accustomed to interpreting and responding to challenges within the realm of what we can see, hear, touch, taste, or smell. The moment something occurs outside this framework, we’re thrown off balance. We aren’t wired to easily process fear when it’s rooted in the unexplainable. For instance, seeing someone move a chair to sit down is perfectly normal. But witnessing that same chair move without any visible cause is alarming. The fear doesn’t necessarily stem from the invisible source itself—it comes from the disorientation of not knowing how or why the chair moved.
Humans thrive on clarity and certainty. We like to believe we’re in control, but in reality, we’re more fragile than we care to admit. Anything that disrupts our comfort zone—anything we can’t explain or categorize—triggers alarm, often leading to panic. In these moments, it’s not the ghost or unseen force that scares us most; it’s the inexplicable event itself, the unknown that challenges our perception of reality.
Perhaps if we learned more about the paranormal, we could alleviate some of the fear it provokes. For instance, one thing that helps me personally is to anticipate the phenomenon. I expect the glass to move, the door to close on its own, or to hear mysterious footsteps. By preparing myself mentally, I’m not as startled when these things happen.
Understanding the unknown might not fully eliminate the fear, but it can certainly help us manage it better.
