We often hear of loved ones from the other side coming to people on this side of life as they approach the end, helping them cross over. Most commonly, we hear of family members, relatives, or friends appearing in these moments. I do not recall hearing of pets or animal companions assisting in a final transition, but I would not be surprised if it were to happen.

In a way, it would be a great honour if our pets came to help us through such a profound moment. I see it as the ultimate expression of love and appreciation from the animal kingdom. What better way for a loyal pet to show love than to reverse roles and become a guide into the next life?

Some might ask why an animal, rather than a human, would appear during a person’s final moments. In my view, animals are neither beneath nor above humans. Love does not discriminate, and pets often offer pure, unconditional love to those who care for them. I see no reason why they could not be part of such a transition, if that is indeed the nature of things.

The photo is of Lookie, my daughter’s British Shorthair.

Lookie has a calm and almost regal presence. He moves through the house with quiet confidence, always knowing when someone needs comfort. He has a way of sitting close without asking for attention, simply offering his silent companionship. His eyes, wise and steady, often feel as if they see more than just this world. If ever a soul could bridge the space between here and whatever lies beyond, I believe it would be one like his.
