The animal kingdom is wondrous. Animals often appear to know when their end is approaching. They withdraw into their own space, where they spend their final days undisturbed before their transition. I have observed that the same may be true of some people who seem to know, or feel, that the end is near. They exhibit distinct behavioural changes, and new patterns emerge. Some may share their feelings, and even specific details about their imminent passing, with those around them. They seem aware of when their time will come and are often at peace with it.
The question, then, is whether we should, if we are able, intervene to prolong their time with us, or resign ourselves to their wishes. It is a double-edged dilemma, difficult to accept. Still, I believe we must respect their wishes even if it means making a painful choice.
I cannot begin to speculate on how animals or people develop these intuitive feelings, or whether they might be receiving some kind of sign. Perhaps it is a gift to receive a form of warning that allows us to prepare for the inevitable. If so, we might do well to view such moments more positively, offering our loved ones comfort and helping to make their transition as peaceful and seamless as possible.
