Many people wonder: what happens to disabilities on the other side? Will I be able to walk again, to see or hear? And what about those suffering from conditions like mental illness, depression, or dementia?
Our spirit is distinct from our physical body. Though our spirit resides within our physical form during life, it remains whole before, during, and after our earthly existence. Physical disabilities are bound to our physical selves, and when we transition to the other side, we are released from these limitations. For example, a person who is blind will not be blind on the other side—unless they choose to be. In one sacred text, a man without a leg asks if he can remain so in heaven, as it’s the life he’s known, and he’s told that the choice is his. It’s fascinating to consider that free will might extend even to such matters in the afterlife.
This raises a profound question: are we meant to have disabilities to learn certain lessons while we’re here on Earth?
Some people believe that disabilities may be connected to our past lives or even a form of “karma” for past actions. The medical community, on the other hand, views them as challenges that can hopefully be overcome or eradicated in the future.
Disabilities can affect us physically, mentally, or emotionally, and each type comes with its own struggles. Some people may face more than one challenge at a time, making life especially demanding. While I can’t say for certain if disabilities are a punishment, a test, or simply part of the human experience, I am continually inspired by those who face these challenges with resilience and grace, meeting each day with courage despite all odds.
